  • Happy Birthday Verdine White!

    http://www.jambase.com/Articles/Story.aspx?storyID=19019

WE GET ALL ELEMENTAL FOR YOUR WEEKEND

Earth Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White celebrates his 58th birthday today, and that presents a nice opportunity to blow our horn for one of the longest running funk-soul outfits in the game. One of the first groups in the 1970s to actively bring in African elements like kalimba and a unique tribal-meets-Egyptian-glam fashion sense. The germ of their sound was already well intact on their self-titled 1971 debut, which was followed by several more critical and artistic triumphs before their first of many mega-hits, 1974's still-fresh-as-hell Open Our Eyes. While the band has gotten a touch too slick at times over the years, perhaps too consciously courting public and commercial approval, there's an underlying creativity and good-as-it-gets musicianship to EWF that has sustained them through decades and currently finds them on a joint headlining tour with equally long-lived pals Chicago. The band also recently performed at the Governors' Dinner at the White House in February for big fan President Barack Obama. It does not suck to be Earth, Wind & Fire. We can't say how 'Air' is doing…

The birthday boy leads the charge with serious authority on one of EWF's tightest joints to kick off this week's selection.

Few take it down and hit ya where you live with such off-handed skill as Earth Wind & Fire, as evidenced by this beloved call for world peace that manages to be sincere without being hokey.

So much of the current soul-jazz scene owes deep thanks to what EWF helped establish. Without this band and cuts like this there'd be no Karl Denson's Tiny Universe or myriad others adored in the jam scene.

This is what the proverbial 'good foot' is tapping to.

Now this looks like a really good time! Don't be afraid of the disco, children. It won't bite…hard.

There are many, well, reasons why many ladies love this band. Phillip Bailey utilizes his golden falsetto well here, wooing well despite his clown pants.

Next, a pair of killers with their current tour mates, including a fab turn from Chicago's Bill Champlin (also Sons of Champlin), one of the great, enduring voices in pop/rock (see our 2005 interview with Bill for more).

In 1978 things were SO groovy for EWF that this is how the world looked to them most days.

The guys show off their facility with doo-wop on this certified classic slow jam.

There's not a sunnier way we could think of to boot y'all into a lovely weekend than this number, so we'll conclude here this week. Verdine just murders the low-end on this one, and we want to thank him for his many years of keeping things locked down with such force and style. Happy birthday, brotherman!

And don't forget, you can eyeball video sweetness 24/7 with JamBase TV.

It defies everything we know from experience, but the pic above with Verdine White (of Earth, Wind & Fire) and the bunnies is actually for a positive cause. • Berklee College of Music: The Music of Earth, Wind, and Fire

    http://home.nestor.minsk.by/jazz/news/2009/02/2601.html

Berklee College of Music: The Music of Earth, Wind, and Fire

The Sovereign Bank Music Series at Berklee continues with Shining Stars: The Music of Earth, Wind and Fire on Saturday, March 7, at 8:15 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. Under the direction of Berklee Ensemble Professor Ken Zambello, and with special guest vocalist and Berklee honorary doctor of music Philip Bailey, students, faculty and alumni will perform such Earth, Wind and Fire classics as "Shining Star, " "September, " "What's New Pussycat, " "Kalimba Story, " and "Fantasy, " among many others from the rich catalog of R&B chart toppers by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

Known for his rare, four-octave vocal range, Bailey joined Earth, Wind and Fire in 1971. For the next two decades, the platinum-selling and Grammy-winning group fused a high-energy mix that crossed cultural and generational boundaries like no other band before it. Spiritually charged and unfettered by artificial boundaries, the band enjoyed universal appeal throughout the '70s and '80s, with a string of successful albums and a live show that quickly assumed legendary proportions. Fueled by Bailey's vastly dynamic vocal range and his emotionally charged delivery, Earth, Wind & Fire's universal appeal continues to this day.

In the midst of Earth, Wind & Fire's ongoing success, Bailey has maintained a parallel career track that began with his 1982 solo debut, Continuation, and the 1984 platinum follow-up, Chinese Wall, co-produced by Phil Collins. The album's Bailey-Collins duet, "Easy Lover, " topped the R&B and pop charts. He also released four gospel albums between 1984 and 1991, including the Grammy-winning Triumph in 1986. Philip Bailey (1994) was a collaboration with singer Brian McKnight, and members of PM Dawn and Arrested Development. Dreams, released in 1998, marked the beginning of his association with the Heads Up label.

Through it all, variety has been Bailey's secret to staying connected with the music. "You can go down this road where the music industry becomes a grind, and if you're not careful after a while, you're just kind of going through the motions, " he says. "So I've always tried to find things that would spark that love again. That's the reason why I've had a multi-faceted type of career including the off-the-cuff projects with Phil Collins, or the gospel thing."

In 2008, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of music by Berklee.

    About Berklee College of Music
Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music.
