  • Wailers Call On Formula 1 Racing Fans To Help Feed School Children

The Wailers recently called on Formula 1 fans at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to help World Food Programme feed millions of hungry school children around the world.

“A cup of nutritious porridge can take a child a long way,” said Wailers' Elan Atlas at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as the Wailers took part in an awareness-raising event for WFP’s ‘Fill the Cup’ campaign to provide food to children in schools all over the developing world.

“It takes only a few cents or dirhams (UAE currency) to fill this cup but this can take a child a long way,” the Wailers said as they stood alongside Toyota team drivers Jarno Trulli and Kamui Kobayashi at the event.

“Let us not forget that one billion people around he world will sleep hungry tonight,” Elan later told the crowds that lined up for the Wailers’ evening concert in the Corniche area of Abu Dhabi.

  • Wailers Inspire Across Genres

In a recent interview with Kyp Malone, frontman of rock sensation TV on the Radio, he revealed his appreciation for the Wailers by stating:

"I spent the better part of my life prejudiced against the Wailers' music due to it's popularity amongst the jock/frat set. Turns out they made music as close to perfect as is possible on this plane. A real lesson."

The Wailers Brings Classic Album to Life on Stage
    August 26, 2009

By Sean Spillane, Connecticut Post, Bridgeport

Aug. 26--Accept no imitations. Especially when it comes to legendary reggae band The Wailers.

That's the word from Elan Atias, the young singer now filling the role left empty with the 1981 death of Bob Marley. The Wailers he performs with are the real deal, still led by bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett, who was a major player on the classic albums of Bob Marley and the Wailers.

"There's this rogue band that's been going around saying they're 'The Original Wailers' and they're basically a cover band (with) guitarists that used to be in the band. They're going around saying they're us, which is pretty funny," Atias said without a trace of humor in his voice.

Atias, in a recent phone interview from his home in Los Angeles, was commenting about the band featuring former Wailers guitarists Al Anderson and Junior Marvin, which played in New Haven a week before The Wailers' show Thursday night at The Klein in Bridgeport. He said everything is going fine with The Wailers, "other than the confusion that people have with Al and Junior trying to do their thing.

"We've got our album almost done -- it'll be coming out next year sometime. It'll have all new material and a bunch of A-list artists from all different genres."

"I can't really mention names now, because we haven't finished the deals. We're still in production. We're almost done. We have more than half the album done. We're just trying to get the paperwork finalized. I don't want to be premature and announce artists."

The process got going on the new album when Barrett discovered some previously unused recordings by his drummer brother, Carly, who passed away in 1987.

"Family had a bunch of tapes of drum tracks made by his brother, Carly, before he died and we transferred to WAV files and digitized them," Atias said. "We started all these new tracks from them and then Family would lay down the bass and everybody would do their stuff.

"The whole idea is to bring the tracks to contemporary artists and other big artists from different genres to add their own vibes and write new lyrics to sing on top of this classic, Wailers-sounding material."

Atias first joined The Wailers in 1997 and stayed for a few years before embarking on a solo career. His previous work with the group was pretty much limited to the concert stage.

"I've done a live album with them back in '97, but this is the first studio album," Atias said of the upcoming record. "I'm very fortunate to be a part of it and to be executive producing it with Family Man as a joint venture."

The Wailers remains a popular attraction on the touring circuit and the group has made its latest tour something even more special by performing "Exodus," the classic 1977 Bob Marley and the Wailers album, in its entirety.

"It's kind of cool because fans get to hear the whole album from start to finish, 'Natural Mystic' to 'One Love,'" Atias said. "I'm just excited to be bringing this music to everybody.

"It's a timeless album. Time magazine voted it the album of the century and 'One Love' was named song of the (millennium) by the BBC. Doing it in its entirety, from start to finish, was an idea that we came up with.

"As a fan, before I got into the business, when I would go to concerts, I would want to hear them play it exactly like the record, with the same track listings, because that was the way that I would hear it in the car or whatever."

With so much of his time spent working on all things Wailers, Atias -- who performs under the single name Elan -- has had to put off working on any new solo material. He has one album, "Together as One," which was released to positive reviews back in 2006.

"It's been put on the back burner," Atias said of his solo work. "I'm still writing and stuff, but I've really concentrated on trying to do this, finish up this Wailers (album).

"I still do a few shows here and there with my band. I've definitely got plenty of material -- I'm writing a lot -- and when the time's right, later on, I'll come out with another album, maybe in a year or so."

The Wailers performs Friday night at 8 at The Klein, 910 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport. The opening act is Destroy Babylon. $22-$27. 203-259-1036, www.fairfieldtheatre.org
